CANNES

CANNES-1+

CANNES-2+CANNES-8+CANNES-7+The 67th edition of the Cannes Film Festival started with a big craze. I arrived so excited in the second week to evolve in its fame and glory. Its always a rare moment for rich and famous to get together and roll out their flamboyant possessions at the “Big Screen Kingdom” of French Riviera.  I was ready to experience it like never before. This is a perfect place for the cinema world to meet to recognize go-getters, discover new talents, masterpieces, show best fashion, jewels, and glamour, while working the tapis rouge. Its all about striking camera ready precision of this “red legendary moment”.  Film icons, actors and hard working show business entourage shine and sparkle catching the attention of millions of spectators while competing for the Palm D’ore trophy.

You better be on your best behavior and clean cut if you want to be swept away.  Talent agents, directors, publicists, journalists, sponsors and cameras are all watching. Competition is fierce with A-list attendance and fresh talent immersion. This 67th edition should be one to remember with big names like Gilles Jacob, and Thierry Fremaux have picked up the year’s best movies, including brand new works by the Olivier Dahan, Olivier Assayas, David Cronenberg, Xavier Dolan, Michel Hazanavicious, Mike Leigh, Ken Loach among others. Particularly this year Cannes pays a special tribute to the director of Pulp Fiction Quentin Tarantino. As always he shakes things up. He makes you want to go to the movies. This very rock’n’roll acknowledgement includes a screening of the film on the beach followed by a party with special guests list. Do you remember feeling electroshock listening to its hilarious dialogue at the screening of this mad movie? In the Lumiere amphitheatre, each person in the audience knows the magnitude of this rare privilege of being one of the first thousand people to see these artists work.

It was a great pleasure to see Saint Laurent film. Its bizarre life story, evolved genus and masterpieces that some stars wore proudly on the Palais stairs sheathed in red carpet. Some of these films educate, tell a story where others are meant to entertain. No matter their purpose we are all affected and united by the freedom of reflection, romance, fun, history but foremost its artistry.

There is so much dazzle, elegance and emotion on every corner.  Beautiful weather permits the parties, galas and events to be filled with top stars, beautiful fashion, elegance vibrant energy. This is also a great time for a spectator like me to relax by the beach, breath, enjoy delicious food, brake all the sweet rules and observe the whole big screen action from a distance.  And when it all got overwhelmed I was admiring more shining beautiful stars in the sky.

The day I decided to stop rushing

Look no further but in a close distance of every passer by we briefly rub shoulders with.  Its evident that we are in a rat race. I catch myself multi tasking reading while walking, answering my cell, searching the net, while watching TV with focus on completely something else. Does this sound familiar to you? I run at 1000 miles per hour trying to cross off my to do list. Each time I proudly put a check mark on any completed task there seems to be three new one immediately popping up. Its a vicious cycle. It starts and ends all over again where time creates this story.

We are all obsessed with time. It seems unfairly speeding faster each day. We all have the same 24 hours given and its up to us what kind of relationship we decide to have with it. If used unwisely it can become our personal deficit crisis without roll over minutes. Like airlines we overbook ourselves believing that we can handle it all. I developed a guilty conscious If I miss attending some event, or a meeting wishing that I could participate in it all at the same time. Often I keep on saying that I crave to clone myself. But is this a way to live? There is only one me. And if you are talking to everybody most likely it means you talking to nobody. Its actually a very costly way to live. NY is the mecca for speed and stress. Its a jungle but instead of palm trees there is lots of concrete, glass, high skypers and unfixed potholes on the streets that damage our overpriced uncomfortable Loubotins pumps. People see value in everything that is super size me, big ticket or over the top. There are so many stimuli competing for our attention. It isn’t good strategy and I think it originates in the lack of confidence.

More then 22 million people in US use illegal drugs, 12 millon use prescription painkillers without a medical reason, and almost 9 million need sleep aids to go to sleep. And the percentage of adults taking antidepressants has gone up 400% since 1988. Those numbers continue to rise. We check our cell phones every 6 minutes. Facebook mania took over obsession of photographing every moment instead of living it.

Can we really give our full attention to anything or anyone anymore? We expect people to get us precisely cutting to the chase instead of waisting our precious time.

It feels like hitting the pause button has great risks in the city that thrives on speed. Otherwise if you don’t come to your senses and don’t hit it sooner or later it will hit you!  But who needs that brutal wake up call?  Wouldn’t be easier to start investing in slowing down, catching a breath, recharging through good night sleep and finally noticing some people and surroundings?. While New York movers and shakers quickly find their perches, their deals get done. We think the more we accomplish we will be recognized and rewarded. It pierces through the crust of our everyday senseless preoccupations.

Observing a lot of sickness and unhappiness around me I have made enormous progress, slowing down, shifting my priorities, letting unimportant go, shutting the door to people who drained me and majorily opening up for wonder. It unfolded the big hunt of reaching for the sky. I loved everything and everybody new around me. Changing the diet to plant base increased my energy, radiance, happiness, and focus. Because Food breeds loyalty. And the best way to everyone’s heart is precisely through that. Unexpectedly new exciting opportunities appeared, beautiful people crossed my path, lots of delicious deserts and gourmet recipes got created and I was proudly sharing my creative discoveries with everyone who listened. My girlfriends started cooking, shopping at farmer’s market and paying more attention to healthy mind and body refueling  We were co-creating this sane space.

For things to change everything had to change. I cherish my morning self made green juice over Via Quadrono $5 cappuccino, growing my own sprouts, being brave to drink daily wheat grass shots, cross walk or jog central park. I found piece in cooking, meditation, yoga, nature, grounding and heaven slice of my Upper East Side neighborhood. This is an area matching very much with my blood. Sweet, quiet, clean, blooming, steps from the park. Exactly how its always been. I was just too busy rushing to notice it!

How clothes can kill you

I was always wondering why my clothes were shrinking with each wash, and were ready to fit my neighbor’s chihuahua. We often automatically assume when checking labels that when its marked cotton or natural we are instantly safe. I have news for you not all cottons are created equal. Non-organic cotton contains residues of herbicides and pesticides that are used in the growing process. Good natural quality fibers are great investment and its life span can last up to 100 washes without changing any shape or form. In comparison to the synthetic or non organic cotton where its washing expectancy can withstand only 10 washes.

As a stylist I select thousands of items from worlds finest designers showrooms. Sadly I have to report that most of them shy away from organic or natural textile content. Good quality, classic styles with a twist can make a great statement at everyone’s wardrobe. If we pay top deniros for them they should at least last us descent amount of time and be safe to wear. Just like slogans never goes out of style its quality and safety should do exactly the same. We can relay on few proven things which is limiting exposure to synthetics as much as we can. This means buying and wearing only natural organic clothing.

1422487_10153458968415273_889583934_nDressing like a chairman triggers people to treat you like one. I really love my job to help others look pristine, but how about if this look is misleading and under your chic expensive attire you are boiling out of discomfort or perspiring off the chemicals that were pre-set prior to your purchase. I used to think that all my freshly bought clothes when washed all the toxic residue simply would go away. Instead I found out that those bad guys can resist even up to a year of intense washes before braking up.

Many chemicals have been designed to be immortal and don’t break down easily. Once they penetrate our body they can present some serious health hazards. Skin rushes, irritations, respiratory, allergies, etc. Recently I have attended lecture with Jeffrey Smith top GMO expert and best selling author of “Seeds of Deception” and learned that Cotton is the most pesticide dependent crop grown anywhere in the world. Mostly cultivated in India. So for every single pair of jeans and every t-shirt using cotton about one pound of pesticides and chemical fertilizers are used.

Invest in quality natural fibers. Focus on quality rather quantity. The more natural fiber clothing you will wear, the safer your body and mind will be. Those looks to kill you are so much inspiring to get indeed can gradually do exactly that!

The most common natural fiber options:

cotton: Fragments from 5000BC have turned up in archeological digs in Pakistan and    Mexico. Today it remains “King” of textiles. Sadly less then 1% organically grown cotton accounts of worldwide cotton production.

flax: It’s considered one of the nature’s strongest fiber and can reach up to 4 feet tall. Its origin goes back to prehistoric times near the Near East later accruing in ancient Egypt, classical Greece, and imperial Rome. Best known as source of linen, used in its finest form to wrap the mummies of Egyptian pharaohs.

hemp: Versatile and handy. The good news is that it grows free off fungicides, herbicides, or pesticides, because its naturally insect resistant. It was original fabric for LEVI’S jeans, before they switched to cotton. Half of the hemp supply is grown in China. Their fibers are 4 times stronger then cotton.

silk: or “queen of fabrics” first developed in ancient China. For generations was worn only by royalty. Its produced by the larvae of a moth species that feeds on the leaves of the white mulberry tree. Today mostly cultivated in domesticated silk farms.

wool: comesfrom sheep. Mostly commercially grown, contaminated with chemicals, such as pesticides that are use to kill parasites on the sheep.  Organic wool slowly is gaining its grove back, with New Mexico providing about 80% of US certified organic wool.
