Every love story is beautiful, but lets be honest – nothing compares to the story closest to our hearts. Maybe it’s the one your mother tells you about how she met your dad when she was 15, forced him to take her to a school dance and they’ve been inseparable ever since (true story). Or maybe it’s the one your grandma tells you of her and your grandfather: they were childhood best friends turned teenage lovers, married at 18, had ten kids quick and are still going strong today. It’s beautiful, it really is. But whether or not your great aunt was a nurse in the war and fell in love with a wounded soldier or your sister met the love of her life on match.com, there is one love story most people forget – their own.
Now let me be clear, I am not talking about how you and your fiancée met and it was love at first sight. I am sure he is the most amazing guy in the entire world. I believe you, I really do. But I am talking about your own love story. You know, the one between you and yourself? It is the most important love story you will ever have, it is the only one that will keep you going strong forever and it is the most forgotten and quite possibly least cherished love of all. So do yourself a favor and when you wake up this Valentine’s Day, take a good look in the mirror and tell yourself you are loved. As the saying goes, if you don’t love yourself, how do you expect anyone else to?
That is why this Valentine’s Day I am reaching out to all my ladies, single and taken, to show a little love … to yourself. Yes, you can still carry out your romantic dinner plans and finish up your do-it-yourself valentine for the hubby, but please promise me one thing: you will treat yourself too. Because I promise, it will be the best gift of all. Whether it’s a bouquet of flowers, a nice long bubble bath or some vegan chocolate you desire (wink wink), I give you permission to go for it. Free yourself of guilt, make no judgments, and just love you for you. Because the only way to truly spread love is to first love yourself.
P.S. And come February 15, I hope you will share your own love story with me.
